Ronin is the callsign of Sicario's 20-man[1] special operations group. They are led by Captain Kelleher and work together with other Sicario elements.

Overview[]

Ronin is typically outfitted in special forces gear, including tactical helmets with mounted NODs, thermal detectors, plate carrier chest rigs, and often carry mission-specific gear such as high-capacity portable data drives. The older members of the squad tend to be more acquainted with Arnold Frenken while the greener ones are more in line with the rest of Sicario. They swear utmost loyalty to him over his own organization for reasons unknown. Their true origins are shrouded in mystery and often scrutinized by others. Every time Frenken himself is questioned, he would shrug it off with placating dismissals and smiles. In fact, their very existence within an aerial warfare-oriented group is an anomaly to many outsiders.[1] The presence of a special operations unit within Sicario's ranks nevertheless affords a unique flexibility to the type of missions the mercenary company is capable of accomplishing.

History[]

Ronin entered Sicario on Frenken's personal behalf. Over time, they gained new members.[1]

Ronin heading to Fort Daggerpoint

On January 9, AC 432 during Sicario's Creole Republic contract, they flew to Fort Daggerpoint on a pair of EP-215s under Hitman Team's cover and harmlessly boarded the Pacific Federation cargo ship Meilynx. There, they discovered a supposed cordium containment chamber with unstable readings and sufficient materials to power an airship for a full year. After the Federation contact ordered the cargo to be destroyed, Ronin immediately exfiltrated, though they still felt the giant explosion in the aftermath.[3]

Ronin participated in the Cascadian Conflict supporting the Cascadian Independence Force as an SAR/reinforcement asset. In battles, they would relieve besieged Cascadian Army divisions behind enemy lines.[4] One of their major operations involved the destruction of the Solana Communications Array, where they infiltrated its airbase and sabotaged a number of Federation defenses before proceeding to seize the command center. Their presence was unannounced by Frenken even to Sicario and only explained to them during the raid. After the operation's success, they put out an all-clear on Federation comms, faking an hourly drill to buy time for their forces to secure anything they can from the ruined facility.[5]

Ronin also participated in Operation Null Star, a raid on the Harkema Industrial Park experimental facility. Working solely with Hitman again, they disabled some radar buoys, allowing for their stealthy entry, before climbing the floating complex's main rig and tagging targets of opportunity. They broke into research labs and found an internal server cluster for them to download vital data into their portable drives. Their search for important intel was supported by Dominic Zaitsev uploading keywords; the AWACS operator, meanwhile, quickly dug into their acquired data to find out what the Federation was up to before the rig was completely destroyed. Ronin also uploaded test pilot Klara Rask's bio into Dominic, who then confirmed her identity as the SP-34R's pilot (who Hitman was fighting at the time), before torching the main rig and making off with numerous Federation scientists escaping the destruction. They waded through the ocean and boarded the Cascadian Coast Guard flagship battleship Eminent Domain for extraction.[2]

Ronin was believed dead by Sicario's few confirmed survivors of the Cascadian Calamity Event until the last major battle of the war at Presidia, where they have been tagging Federation defense layers and fighting with Cascadian partisans ever since going dark. How many members survived the Presidian Disaster is uncertain.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

Matthew Nguyen said he envisions a first-person shooter spinoff centered around Ronin, also claiming he is on friendly terms with many developers for the genre.[7]

Quotes[]

Etymology[]

The group's name refers to wandering samurais who are not in a service of a lord or master in feudal Japan.

Trivia[]

Ronin's firearms arsenal is unusual as it is a mishmash of World War II and Cold War-era firearms. They include customized variants of the Thompson and Sterling submachine guns, the Sten, the FG42, and the SA80. This can be attributed to their mercenary nature and the World on Fire's post-apocalyptic setting.
