The Cascadian National Guard is the state military organization of Cascadia. As a mainly defensive force, its only offensive deployment in history is the Oceanian War.

Experience and battle tactics learned in the war had hardened a number of National Guard units, primarily the Wild Boar Regiment,[1] though when the Cascadian Conflict began, it was split between Pacific Federation loyalists and those aligned with the Cascadian Independence Force.

The National Guard's military strength is implicitly powerful enough that theoretically, a unified National Guard would've stood on equal footing in a war against the Federation, such as the above conflict.[2] By the end of the war, however, it was almost completely decimated,[3] being supplanted by mercenaries in the Cascadian Foreign Legions.[4]

Branches[]

History[]

Formed during Cascadia's early days, the National Guard made its first moves setting up facilities (such as Brite Fortress in Audrerie Valley) between highly contested factions in order to dissuade any final grievances lasting since before national unification from being carried out, as the bad blood between said factions still persisted.[5]

Over the next 400 years, the National Guard's activities began to cross over with the Dustlands in eastern North America, leading to Cascadia earning a bad reputation with a number of smaller countries in-continent, which lasted up until the Cascadian Conflict where the Federation's awesome power terrified these nations enough into supporting Cascadian independence.[6] They also built an elaborate air defense network at Wensleydale Range designated the Chaohord Defense Region, meant to target trespassing freelancers[7] and possibly other Dustland incursions.

When Cascadia entered an association with the Federation in AC 382, it added to its already sizeable military power, sharing bases such as Rowsdower Air Force Base[8] and enforcing the lockdown of exclusion zones such as in Solstitium.[9] The National Guard got involved in the Oceanian War, with Morgan Elizabeth being Cascadia's representative to the Federation Peacekeepers. The war shaped not only their skills, but also their perception of mercenaries drastically, for respectively better and worse.

The Cascadian Conflict erupted 15 years later following much pressure from pro-war/independence elements of the National Guard after disagreement with the Federation's continuing imperial expansion,[10] resulting in the fragmentation of the National Guard; the CIF, although gaining the upper hand at first, was swiftly scattered and wiped out, losing over 30% of its active forces. The Wild Boar Regiment, commanded by Elizabeth himself, notably held out much better than other National Guard units on both sides.[1][11] Pro-Federation loyalists were assigned specific comm frequencies for OPSEC, while former Air Force pilot J. Griffiths was, to his reluctance, assigned by the CIF as their liaison for mercenaries on their side.[8] Over time, the National Guard saw defecting elements as the Federation landed more and more non-natives into the country, with some even being discharged, unwittingly contributing to the rebel war effort.[12][13]

Eventually, despite presumably reforming by absorbing the CIF back to its fold, the National Guard was all but almost completely depleted of its strength by the war's end,[3] being supplanted by mercenaries in the Cascadian Foreign Legions.[4] On a lesser note, the Cascadian government, having struck a deal with Sicario, the PMC that helped them the most, issued a search warrant to citizens for their Hitman Team, who remained at large, to report sightings to National Guard MPs.[14]
