- "Calamity. That's what this is. This is what it had to be, right? Right? By God..."
- ― Dominic Zaitsev, shortly after the Prospero Disaster[1]
The Cascadian Calamity Event,[2] also called the Second Calamity, was a reignition of the Ring of Fire during the Cascadian Conflict. The event happened as an effect of the Pacific Federation's mass deployment of cordium-tipped cruise missiles at Prospero and its inactive volcano during Operation Anticipation. Although the entire Pacific Rim was affected by it, Cascadia, being at the epicenter, had the worst of the disaster.
The event resulted in a breakdown in communications across the country and perhaps the whole North American continent, and forced all those in danger zones to take shelter and halt the war for two months, even making them resort to old-fashioned mail. A number of bases were also consumed by the new geothermal hotspots as well, forcing their staff to relocate to other bases and make use of ordinary installations as makeshift bases.[3] The Cascadian Independence Force was the first to recover, having people used to dangerous environments scout out Federation bases.[4]
By the time a full two months passed, cordium reactivity went down to normal levels in most areas save the most concentrated ones, and anomalous storms and tectonic disruptions settled down. If indication was due, the greater matter now shifted to the massive infrastructural and environmental damage, including the persistent wildfires. Still, those who wanted out of shelter were warned to be on high guard traveling through affected locations.[5]
Affected regions in Cascadia include, from north to south:
- Rowsdower Air Force Base
- Salvemini Vineyards
- Solstitium
- Grimwood Forest
- Wensleydale Range
- Aitor Desert
